چکیده

This paper describes the first application of reverse-polarity capillary zone electrophoresis for rapid and accurate determination of nitrate and nitrite in Hanford defense waste (HDW). The method development was carried out by using synthetic Hanford waste, followed by the analysis of four real HDW samples. Hexamethonium bromide (HMB) was used as an electroosmotic flow modifier in a borate electrolyte at pH 9.2 to decrease the electroosmotic flow, enhancing the speed and resolution of the analytical determination of nitrate and nitrite in high ionic strength HDW samples. The application of this capillary zone electrophoresis method, when compared with ion chromatography for two major components of HDW, nitrate and nitrite, slightly reduced analysis time, eliminated most pre-analysis handling of the highly radioactive sample, and cut analysis wastes by more than two-orders of magnitude. The migration times of nitrate and nitrite in the real HDW and the spiked HDW samples were within a precision of less than 3% relative standard deviation. The selectivity ratio test used for peak confirmation of the spiked samples was within 96% of the real sample. Method reliability was tested by spiking the matrix with 1.0 mM nitrate and nitrite. Recoveries for these spiked samples were 93–103%.  1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Highly sensitive capillary zone electrophoresis with artificial seawater as the background electrolyte and transient isotachophoresis as the on-line concentration procedure for simultaneous determination of nitrite and nitrate in seawater.

Transient isotachophoresis-capillary zone electrophoresis with artificial seawater as the background electrolyte (BGE) was improved to further lower the limit of detection (LOD) for determination of nitrite and nitrate in seawater. By lowering the pH of BGE, the difference between effective mobility of nitrite and that of nitrate increased, thereby permitting increased sample volumes to be tole...

Indirect measurement of nitric oxide production by monitoring nitrate and nitrite using microchip electrophoresis with electrochemical detection.

An indirect method for monitoring nitric oxide (NO) by determining nitrate and nitrite using microchip capillary electrophoresis (CE) with electrochemical (EC) detection has been developed. This method combines determination of nitrite by direct amperometric detection following a microchip-based CE separation and conversion of nitrate to nitrite by chemical reduction using Cu-coated Cd granules...

Determination of Aciclovir and its Related Substance Guanine in Bulk Drug and Tablet Preparation by Capillary Electrophoresis

Two Capillary Zone electrophoresis (CZE) methods were developed in this study, one using an acidic buffer (sodium citrate pH = 2.5) and the other using a basic buffer (sodium tetraborate pH = 9.8). The two methods were compared on the basis of repeatability and reproducibility of results and the CZE method developed with the basic buffer was then selected for further studies. The method was ful...

Sensitive determination of anions in saliva using capillary electrophoresis after transient isotachophoretic preconcentration.

A transient isotachophoresis-capillary electrophoresis (tITP-CE) system for the determination of minor inorganic anions in saliva is described. The complete separation and quantification of bromide, iodide, nitrate, nitrite, and thiocyanate has been achieved with only centrifugation and dilution of the saliva sample. In-line tITP preconcentration conditions, created by introduction of the plugs...

Solidification of Sodium Bearing Waste Using Hydroceramic and Portland Cement Binders

AM-S19-39 A hydroceramic is a monolithic solid produced by a hydration driven reaction that occurs after mixing metakaolin with concentrated NaOH solution. The chemistry of the starting materials is optimized to encourage the formation of tectosilicates (zeolites, feldspathoids) during curing. Furthermore, the process is forgiving enough so that a variety of caustic waste streams can be accommo...
